KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Truman State University in Kirksville is one of many public universities in the Show-Me State once again facing another round of budget cuts.

On Tuesday, Governor Nixon proposed cutting state funding for Higher Education by 12.5 percent for the 2012-2013  academic year.

State Representative Zach Wyatt said the move is part of the Governor's attempt to find a way to close the budget gap. In December, Nixon asked several state universities if they would loan the state money to fill the gap. After facing opposition, he dropped that idea and now has proposed to cut funding to Higher Ed altogether.

Wyatt said the consensus in the General Assembly is to reduce the percentage of the cuts proposed by the Governor.

"Hopefully, we will be able to get that percentage whittled down," said Rep. Wyatt, (R) - Novinger.

"We will be balancing the budget, making sure everything is funded to the best of the abilities of what our revenues are bringing in and hopefully, we'll be able to not have to see such draconian cuts to Higher Ed."

Wyatt hopes the percentage of cuts can be reduced to around six percent.

The Governor's proposal would cut Truman State's budget by $5.5 million dollars.
