KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Update: 5:31 p.m.
The City of Kirksville has issued a 48-hour Boil Water Advisory, starting at 3 p.m. Sunday and ending at 3 p.m. Tuesday. This is in effect for residences and businesses located on Main Street between Washington and Jefferson Streets. This includes the movie theatre, and Traveler's Apartments.
According to John Buckwalter, the Director of Kirksville Public Works, an older cast iron main failed causing the pipe to split and burst. The water main break was reported around 8:30 a.m. Sunday and Buckwalter said crews responded immediately after. upon arrival, the crews located the problem and then shut down the valves. They repaired the line by cutting out the damaged section and used a clamp to install the new section.
Buckwalter said a limited area around the water main break was affected; he said others may have felt lower water pressure, including Truman State University. Water was turned off around noon for residences and businesses nearby. It was turned back on around 3 p.m. when the main was fixed. Buckwalter said the leak was very large since it was a large diameter pipe and located at the base of the water tower.
