OTTUMWA, IOWA -- For our Facebook story of the day for Tuesday, our fans wanted to know; what is local law enforcement's policy regarding the use of tasers?
KTVO spoke with Sgt. Chad Farrington of the Ottumwa Police Department. According to Sgt. Farrington, officers must go through a course with the Iowa Law Enforcement Agency. In that course, officers learn how to properly use a taser. Also, officers must review the policy and procedures for the department regarding tasers.
Sgt. Farrington told KTVO that the department does have some situations where officers will not use tasers.
"We also have situations on individuals that we will not deploy the taser against them unless there is an immediate life threatening situation. Those would be the elderly, the very young, pregnant females, people that are known to have heart ailments or pacemakers and also past resistant suspects," said Sgt. Farrington.
Sgt. Farrington told KTVO that using a taser is another tool that the department can use, and it only used on a case by case basis.
