KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- It's time to get your car ready for winter and with that being said, many of you wanted to know more on what the laws are regarding snow tire usage for Friday’s ‘Facebook Story of the Day’.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there is no law regarding when or when you can't have snow tires on your vehicle.

As for studded snow tires or chains, November 1st through March 31st is when you can legally use them.

Here’s how the law reads: Missouri revised statute 307.171 states, No person shall operate any motor vehicle upon any road or highway of this state between the first day of April and the first day of November while the motor vehicle is equipped with tires containing metal or carbide studs. Any person violating the provisions of this section is guilty of an infraction.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol wants to remind drivers to allow themselves extra traveling time during the winter months and to slow down.

Remember to give your car a chance to warm up before you begin your journey. Clear all its windows of that pesky frost, snow, and ice.

Keep a box of emergency equipment in the trunk of your car. Some of the equipment should include flares, blankets, flashlight, gloves, tools, and anything else that might help you in an emergency.

Always keep your fuel tank at least half full, and never use cruise control when roads are slick.
