OTTUMWA -- The Ottumwa Area Chamber of Commerce wants residents to nominate community members for a volunteer award.
The Gene Schultz Community Service award will be presented to a qualified individual in February of next year. Schultz spent many years volunteering and making Ottumwa a better place to live. Executive Director Terry McNitt says a nominee should have the following qualities.
"Somebody who's done substantial amount of volunteer service, substantial amount of community projects substantial amount of good for the community,” McNitt tells KTVO. “We want to make sure that you put a nomination and recognize this person for their service.
The deadline to nominate someone is Jan. 30. You can pick up a form at the chamber’s office in downtown Ottumwa. A special committee will then select this year’s winner. Previous nominees will also be considered for the award.
According to the form there are a number of criteria for the selection.
- Contributes to the betterment of their workplace, church, community and family
- Participates in civic activity
- Is proud of the Ottumwa community
- Is enthusiastic about the community
- Is a person who makes a difference in the lives of the people and the community
- Is a worker as well as an organizer
- Promotes Ottumwa
- Allegiance is to the community as a whole rather than to one group
- No selfish motivation
- Gives credit and recognition
