School bus crash results in injury

KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- UPDATE: A crash involving a car and a Kirksville school bus sent a total of seven people to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries Monday afternoon.

The collision happened just before 3 p.m. at the intersection of Jefferson and Halliburton streets.

Police told KTVO the school bus, driven by Thomas May, 57, of LaPlata, was northbound on Halliburton Street and failed to yield the right-of-way to a car traveling east on Jefferson Street.

The car was driven by Erin Harpenau, 25, of Kirksville.     

Police said the car basically broadsided the bus.

The school bus was carrying 27 students at the time of the crash.

Six students were taken by ambulance to Northeast Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Harpenau was also treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

The students who were hurt are all from Kirksville.

They are Gus Davis, 15, Marcy Snodgrass, 17, Christopher Thomas, 16, Hailey Waxi, 13, Lakota Wilhite, 16, and Dakota Yardley, 13.

Police said the bus driver was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of a vehicle collision involving a Kirksville School bus late Monday afternoon.

The call came in around 3 p.m.

The crash, involving the school bus and a car, occurred at the intersection of Halliburton and Jefferson Streets.

Nearly a half dozen people were believed to be transported from the scene for treatment of minor injuries.
    
No names have been released at this time.
