KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- On Monday, our Facebook friends wanted to know the requirements for  installing a wood burning stove in a house.

KTVO spoke with Kirksville Codes and Inspection Director Brad Selby and as it turns out the city does not have a ton of requirements.

"City requirements on wood stoves are they must be installed according to the manufacturer's specifications. We don't have many rules or regulations on inspections. We just require homeowners to install them as the manufacturer says," Selby said.

There is not a height requirement of the chimney in the City of Kirksville. However, there is a smoke ordinance. Homeowners are asked to make sure the chimney shoots smoke up and away from other residences. Try to keep the smoke from going out the side of the house.

There are also certain asbestos covers or pads for your wall and floor. Make sure you lay those down to protect your house from a fire or use what the manufacturing company recommends.

The city advises residents to pay close attention to what the manufacturer recommends. Residents who live outside the city limits are advised to follow county regulations.
