DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Some Iowa prison inmates have filed a class-action lawsuit against the state, saying they were held past their release dates.
The lawsuit cited by the Des Moines Register seeks compensation for each day the inmates served beyond their release date.
It was filed the week of Nov. 7 in Polk County District Court on behalf of Richard Scott and other inmates. The filing states that Scott was held an extra 46 days, citing a decision issued over the summer by the Iowa Supreme Court that outlined new rules for calculating release dates.
The Department of Corrections said a November review of release dates led to the immediate release of 551 inmates and new release dates were calculated for 2,588 others.
A corrections spokesman declined to comment on the lawsuit.
