ELDON, IOWA -- For the Facebook story of the day our viewers wanted to what are the requirements for homeschooling children in Iowa.

According to Iowa code, students can fall into two possibilities:  the confident private instruction or CPI which is taught by a licensed teacher or the home school assistant program where the student is taught at home by the parents and with resources from the school.

Cardinal school district superintendent Joel Pedersen says students must also pass certain tests to make sure they are hitting certain benchmarks.  Many students will take the Iowa test of basic skills and for older students the Iowa test of educational development or I-TED’s.

If parents want to home-school their child, they should contact their local school district.

“We'll talk to them about options and then we'll provide them resources that they can use at home and if they need more resources they can kind of just work together with the school and we will allow them to use resources that we have to help their student,” Pedersen said.
