KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- For Monday's Facebook Story of The Day, many of you wanted to know about what after school programs are available for heartland children.
We went to the Adair County Family YMCA in Kirksville and learned that they have an after school program available for children in kindergarten through 6th grade. They walk over from school to The Y with the help of a staff member. There they do a variety of activities from homework assistance, games, and arts and crafts. It runs from 2:45-6pm Monday through Friday. If you are a member of The Y, it costs $30 a month and $80 a month for non-members.
YMCA Program Director Brittni Garver says that this helps keeps the kids busy and out of trouble.
“I think it's important for the kids to come on over after school because it gives them that one on one with the staff, so it gives them that individual attention.” Said Garver. “We get to do fun things, but it also gives them a structure that continues on with their day after school.”
Other than The Y, Kirksville Public School does also have an after school program called The Tiger Club. This program helps assist kids from kindergarten to 8th grade reach their academic potential in subjects such as math and reading. It runs from 3-5pm Monday–Friday. The cost is free.
There is also a The Tiger Club Plus which is from 5-6pm Monday–Friday for those who need extended care. The cost is $15 a week.
