KIRKSVILLE, MO -- The 2011 Missouri Livestock Symposium will be held Friday and Saturday, December 2 & 3 at the Kirksville Middle School located at 1515 S. Cottage Grove, Kirksville, Missouri.

The Symposium will feature Van Hargis from Sulphur Springs, Texas. Van’s practical experiences on the ranch and in competition, coupled with his dynamic speaking ability, have made him one of the most requested clinicians at equestrian facilities and events across the country. He will speak on two topics at the 2011 Missouri Livestock Symposium: Standing While Mounting and Bit by Bit (bit education).

Also on the program will be Dr. Ted Stashak from Santa Rosa, California. A veterinarian, Dr. Stashak is considered one of the world’s foremost experts on wounds in horses. He has published articles, book chapters, and even a text book on the subject. He is presently the guest editor for a journal focusing on equine wound management and he lectures worldwide on the subject of wound care—the title of his talk at the Symposium.

In addition to Van Hargis and Ted Stashak, there will be an equine panel roundtable moderated by Missouri Director of Agriculture Dr. Jon Hagler. An avid horse enthusiast and horse industry supporter Dr. Hagler will preside over a panel of equine experts to discuss and answer questions related to the latest diseases, management, and issues that are of concern in the horse industry today.

The 2011 Missouri Livestock Symposium also features speakers from coast to coast that will speak on beef cattle, sheep, meat goats, stock dogs, forages and even backyard poultry production. There will also be an agriculturally-related trade show, beef and pork cutting and cooking demonstrations, a classic tractor display, and much more. Full details about the 2011 Missouri Livestock Symposium can be found at www.missourilivestock.com or by calling 660-665-9866 or 660-341-6625.

The Symposium is free and no registration is needed. Hours are 4-9 p.m. on Friday, December 2 and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, December 3.  There is a free beef dinner on Friday night at 6 p.m. and the Symposium will kick off with a keynote address that evening from Mike Adams, host of the popular radio program AgriTalk. On Saturday morning there will be free coffee and donuts as well as a free Governor’s Style Luncheon at noon co-sponsored by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and numerous Missouri commodity organizations.

The 2011 Missouri Livestock Symposium concludes Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. with a country music concert featuring Becky Blackaby (beckyblackaby.com). Tickets for the concert are $10.00 and can be purchased by calling the Adair County Extension Center at 660-665-9866.
