KIRKSVILLE, MO -- For our Friday’s Facebook Story of The Day, many viewers wanted to know if businesses that sell winning lottery tickets get a bonus even if no one claims the prize.

KTVO spoke with Missouri Lottery media manager Susan Goedde. She told us that retailers who sell a jackpot for either Powerball or Mega-Millions receive a $50,000 bonus.

Retailers also receive a bonus on the other draw games. The bonus on these games for winners of $10,000 or more is 1% of the prize amount.

If you ever win a prize from the lottery, there are rules to follow:

Prize winners on draw games have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prize.

Prize winners on scratchers tickets have 180 days from the end of the game to claim their prize.

Unclaimed prizes are added to the amount the lottery pays to public education.

Retailers receive on average 6.2 cents of each dollar paid for a ticket.
