OTTUMWA -- An Iowa 4-H program teaches elementary students the importance of food safety.
It’s all part of the Iowa State extension office’s food club. Fourth through sixth graders come together once a month during early dismissal days in the Ottumwa Community School District to learn everything from food preparation to food safety.
Gina Martin, food club coordinator, says on Wednesday the students learned to cook sandwiches on a stick, a taco roll up and a calzone.
“The focus is just on different things about food preparing, recipes, learning about healthy food choices, food preparation and how to store food,” Martin said.
The cost to join the food club is $45 and will run once a month until the rest of the school year. Contact the Iowa State extension office of Wapello County.
