KIRKSVILLE, MO -- How does KTVO broadcast their signal?
The KTVO signal comes down from an ABC satellite. The signal is sent through the building, where information can be added when needed, then it goes up to the transmitter located between Lancaster and Downing, Missouri.
The inserted information includes local programming. The local programming is in standard definition, so viewers can not watch that in high definition. Dish Network does not broadcast high definition signal for KTVO. KTVO can broadcast high definition if it comes in as high definition.
The tower located between Lancaster and Downing, Missouri is 1,000 feet tall and transmits a sixty mile consistent signal radius.
There are still unanswered questions when it comes to digital signal stability. The digital signal is not near as strong as the analog channel 3 signal. Digital signal can go in and out just like the analog system did, however the picture will not appear fuzzy, it will just disappear. If you see segments or tiling of the picture, that means the signal strength is not strong.
Some viewers have said that during the winter months the signal is more clear than the summer months. The signal can actually be affected by leaves on trees. The viewer needs to make sure that the antenna path is clear to the transmitter site. Viewers should not point their antennas toward Kirksville because the actual transmitter site is twenty six miles north.
John Wise, KTVO Chief Engineer said, "Make sure you have a good outdoor antenna. Digital signals do not like rabbit ears. For years we were able to pick up the analog signal on a coat hanger. Those days are now gone."
