KIRKSVILLE, MISSOURI -- The Kirksville Downtown Improvement Committee is pushing ahead with their plans to make downtown a Community Improvement District.
Right now, they are finalizing the legal description of the district with the Kirksville City attorney and creating a board. The committee hopes to have those two tasks complete by Oct. 7. Then, they will hand out a petition to the 175 business owners in the downtown area to sign.
If they get enough signatures, they will hand the petition over to the city council who will then vote on the measure. The Executive Director of the committee said he thinks it will pass and said that the committee has many plans for the CID.
"We're looking at doing mini grants, sidewalk snow removal," said Jeremy Pingel, the Executive Director of the Kirksville Development Improvement Committee.
"We're looking at co-op advertising. There are a variety of options the board has considered thus far."
The committee wants to have monthly events. If the downtown area becomes a community improvement district, a half-cent sales tax will be put in place. That money will help fund their programs as well as fund the KDIC Executive Director's salary, which is currently funded by a grant that will terminate in February.
