OTTUMWA -- Residents looking to get rid of leaves and other yard waste must follow certain guidelines in Ottumwa.
Bags with the designated Ottumwa-Wapello label on them will be the only bags picked up curbside in the city. More bags will be seen on the streets as the leaves begin to fall.
“Those bags we pay a dollar for those at most of the grocery stores in town,” said public information officer Tom Rodgers. “That extra dollar helps pay for the transport of the yard waste.”
Rodgers added that if someone wants to bag their leaves in a container they own they can still drop off the leaves or yard waste at the facility. If they leave their containers by the curb they will not be picked up.
"By law, we're required to separate yard waste from our regular trash.”
The leaves will be recycled and most likely turn into mulch the city can reuse.
