KIRKSVILLE, MO --
This week is all about local foods in Kirksville.
    
The Truman State University Department of Agricultural Science has teamed up with the University of Missouri for Local Foods Week.
    
Locally grown produce, meat, and dairy are being showcased throughout the week at different events.

“We're really excited about local foods because it supports our own area economy. It supports healthy eating, fresh vegetables, fresh eggs, fresh meats and dairies, and we also support the whole concept of close to home, reducing your food miles, there's so many ways to do it, especially in this agricultural community,” said Will Erker, Local Foods Coordinator.
    
Wednesday's feature was the Truman Market on the Mall where students and the public can buy produce grown on the University Farm at Truman.
    
Local Foods Week runs through Saturday.

On Thursday the public can head out to the University Farm for free burgers and a Vegetable Production Tour starting at 5 p.m.

Head to the Downtown Grocery Store Friday for a cooking demonstration at 5 p.m. and a discount on produce.
 
The event wraps up Saturday with the Kiwanis Farmer’s Market on the Square from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., and a local Foods Special Feature at Pickler’s Famous starting at 6:30 p.m.
    
All the proceeds from this week will benefit the Green Thumb Garden at Ray Miller Elementary School.

“Some of our first projects include building a fence around our area, some garden expansion projects, we just invested in some garlic to plant for a fall crop so some of the money will be going towards that and then also becoming a 501C3 is our next big goal and that's about $800 so we're trying to raise money for that,” said Green Thumb Project Coordinator Brockell Briddle.
