OTTUMWA, IOWA -- To many in the political world, Florida has caused one too many problems in the political process. And if their state legislature has its way, they might be going after so called, “first in the nation” states next, like Iowa.
It’s been widely speculated that the Florida legislature is going to pass legislation that would move their primary to January 31st. In doing so, the state would loose some of their delegates, a risk they are willing to take.
On Wednesday afternoon, KTVO spoke with Wapello County Republican Chair Trudy Caviness. Caviness informed KTVO that either way, Iowa will always be first.
“Obviously, Iowa is going to be number one. We are going to be first. We may have to move to the first part of January; that’s not our choice, but if that’s what it takes, we will be number one. With Florida moving this up, it just makes Iowa that much more important. They realize the importance of Iowa and us choosing and going into caucus and choosing a candidate,” said Caviness.
Caviness explained to KTVO that other states want to move their dates because they want to be apart of the process that Iowa and a handful of other states have been apart of for years.
“We, as Iowans, do have a responsibility to talk to these candidates and vet these candidates. And, the other states see how important it is to be apart of this process that Iowa has enjoyed,” said Caviness.
Caviness believes that the primary and caucus dates should be set in place this coming Friday, which will then set in place the date the Iowa Caucus will take place.
