OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The American Red Cross, Hy-Vee, the University of Nebraska and the University of Iowa have launched a competition looking for "citizen heroes". They're looking for anyone who has performed an extraordinary act of courage or dedicated countless hours to a special cause.
One hero from Nebraska and Iowa will be selected and acknowledged during halftime at the Hawkeye-Cornhuskers football game on Friday, Nov. 25.
Nominees must be at least 18 years old, and live, work, or go to school in Iowa or Nebraska.. But, their act of heroism or good deed could have occurred anywhere.
"It's people who do not get the recognition who are behind the scenes and continually give back to their community in some way," said Gordon Aistrope, who is the Chairman of the Heroes of the Heartland Event Committee and one of the members of the selection committee for the "Citizen Heroes" competition.
The winner will receive four tickets to the game, and a trophy with their name and hometown inscribed on it.
Nominations are being accepted from until Oct. 31.
Nomination forms can be downloaded on www.hyvee.com or picked up at any Hy-Vee location in Iowa or Nebraska. Also, nominations can be mailed to the American Red Cross Des Moines office, 2116 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312 or faxed to (515) 244-8012 by midnight on Oct. 31.
