KIRKSVILLE, MO --
The smell of crisp bacon was in the air in downtown Kirksville Saturday at its first ever Bacon Fest.
Kraft gave out thousands of free BLT sandwiches and there was even an opportunity to sample bacon ice cream.
Other highlights included a Bacon Fest Pageant, appearances by the Kool-Aid man and Oreo Man, and of course, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.
“We're celebrating the 75th anniversary of the big dog. It's 27 feet long, that's 60 hotdogs to be exact, 11 feet high and 8 feet wide. Today we're passing out wiener whistles, taking free pictures in front of the wienermobile, spreading miles of smiles and buns of fun,” said Hotdogger Danica Schmidt.
“Bacon Fest takes place in a lot of different cities, this is the first time its been in a pretty much small town, and so far the attendance has been pretty good, we've had a lot of people coming out to get free BLTs, we've had different teams from Kraft and Truman participate in the food drive competition,” said Bacon Fest Committee Chairman Shawn Gadley.
Attendees were asked to donate food to The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri in lieu of admission.
Entertainment was provided by the TruMen, Round Barn Blues Performers, and University Swingers.
The Kirksville Bacon Fest had something for everybody from bounce houses for kids to a recipe competition for the adults.
