BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- The Davis County Hospital held its 14th annual Walk for Life Saturday morning.
The walk is usually held in the evening but this year, organizes decided to make it earlier in hopes of getting a bigger turnout. During the run, they said they were pleased with the apart of walkers signed up.
Every year, the Walk is dedicated to a breast cancer survivor. This year, the walk was dedicated to Shirley Smith, who has survived breast cancer for the past two years.
The Walk co-chair said the purpose of the Walk is to raise money so that all women can afford the proper medical screenings.
"It saves lives, early detection. That's what we promote and we don't want people to put it off just because they can't afford it," said Sylvia Schlarbaum, who has retired from working at the Davis County Hospital.
Schlarbaum said she hopes the proceeds will be enough to fund mammograms for at least 10 women. The money raised will also go towards breast health education initiatives. If you missed out on the walk and would still like to donate, organizers say you can write a check to "Walk for Life 2011" in care of the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield, Iowa.
