OTTUMWA, IOWA -- For our Facebook Story of the Day, fans wanted to know what school districts take into consideration when devising school lunch menus.

In Iowa, districts have to comply with the Iowa Healthy Kids Act, signed by Governor Culver in 2008.

The law requires that entrees are less than or equal to 400 calories and that side dishes are less than or equal to 200 calories. 50 % grains offered must be whole grains.

Schools in Iowa are prohibited from selling carbonated beverages to any school student during the school day and caffeinated beverages and sports drinks are prohibited from being sold during the school day to elementary school students.

The purpose of the law is to encourage healthy eating habits in school that can be carried on throughout the children's lives.
