BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- On Saturday, people throughout Davis County and the Heartland will come together to participate in the 14th Annual Walk for Life benefit. The program was started to provide mammography services for people in need throughout Davis County. Organizers have dedicated the fund to the memory of Debbie Mincks-Lindeen. Mincks-Lindeen lost her fight against breast cancer in 1989.
On Thursday afternoon, KTVO spoke with two employees at Davis County Hospital, Susan Haskell and Kathi Scott. Both Haskell and Scott are involved in the Walk for Life program.
Haskell, who works with the new mammography machine at Davis County Hospital, explained to KTVO what the new machine can do.
“Our new GE Essential machine delivers the lowest dose of radiation and the most up-to-date technology with the sharpest and clearest image. Our images now are like comparing a film screen camera to a digital camera. We have a sharper and clearer picture that allows our radiologists to see different legions that they couldn’t see before,” said Haskell.
It’s machines like the one at Davis County Hospital that make early detection the key to overcoming breast cancer. And that is what Saturday’s benefit is about. Scott took talked about what kind of benefits the less fortunate receive because of the program.
“The program benefits anyone in the community who is in need of a mammogram. Those people could be under-insured, or their health insurance may not cover the procedure because of a high deductable. So, this is an event where neighbors help neighbors so that help could be provided to those who need a mammogram,” said Scott.
The Walk for Life will be held at Mustang Stadium at Davis County High School in Bloomfield, Iowa this Saturday at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. There is a $25 registration fee. This year’s event is being dedicated to Shirley Smith. Smith is a 2 year breast cancer survivor.
