OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Volunteers from around Ottumwa came together Wednesday to take part in the United Way’s Day of Caring.

KTVO caught up with some volunteers at The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Ottumwa. Employees from Cargill, John Deere and U.S. Bank showed up to the store to help clean and organize.

Captain Olive Knuth with the Salvation Army explained what the volunteers were doing to help.

“We have them here helping reorganize the store and re-do our store. We want to make things flow better, smoother and easier. The main purpose is to make it easier for the customers to come in and shop and find things that they are looking for. We are very grateful to Cargill, John Deere and U.S. Bank for allowing their employees to come in and do this. It is great to have this kind of turn out.”

Knuth was referring to the 20 plus volunteers that took time out of their work schedule to help the Salvation Army.

Captain Knuth says that days like Wednesdays are great, but that they need volunteers all year long.

“We are always looking for volunteers to help with different things; to help with the thrift store, through sorting clothes, to help putting out donated items. But, I just want to thank the Untied Way for putting all of this together. For organizing it, and getting all of the volunteers together, it is great,” said Knuth.
