OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Southeast Iowans got a chance to learn about volunteering in their community, Saturday, Sept. 10 as part of the United Way of Wapello County's fall Community Day at the Quincy Place Mall.
Shoppers were able to learn about the everyday operations of more than a dozen local organizations and learn where they could give a helping hand. There were many informative booths set up, including those from the Red Cross, the Crisis Center, and the Heartland Pregnancy Center.
Staff members at the United Way said the day is meant to inspire people to get involved in their communities.
"It allows people in the community who may not know about some of these programs to come out, talk to people, see what's out there, and what they can do to really take action and make a difference in their community," said Ali Wilson, the Volunteer Center Coordinator at the United Way in Wapello County.
At the United Way booth, they took a poll to see which education measures the community cared most about--third grade reading and math levels or area high school graduation rates.
They also announced their Peace Pole Dedication Ceremony on Sunday, Sept.11 at 3 pm in the Ottumwa Central Park.
