OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Across the country, many Comfort Keepers franchises are collecting nonperishable foods throughout the month of September as apart of their campaign to fight senior citizen hunger.
"It's important for Comfort Keepers to collect this food because like I said, sometimes it goes without notice," said Angelia Scott, the Office Manager of the Ottumwa Comfort Keepers branch. "You may think your loved one is eating or has food or even your neighbor but it's important for us to raise this awareness so nobody goes unfed."
September is Hunger Action Month and according to the Meals on Wheels Association of America, hunger is a growing problem amongst those 65 and older. Their research indicates that in 2025, an estimated one million American seniors will suffer from hunger.
Comfort Keepers offers in-home care for seniors. At the Ottumwa branch, employees said that sometimes their patients have to decide between purchasing a prescription or eating.
"We have ran into only a couple cases to where they had not eaten in several days," said Scott. "That is why it's smart that if you are not able to go to check on your loved ones, that you have someone who is to go eat with them at meal times. "
Comfort Keepers is working with Wildwood Elementary School in their campaign. Whichever classroom donates the most will win a pizza party.
Drop off boxes are located at the North Hy-Vee, South Hy-Vee and the Comfort Keepers office located at 407 Church, Street, Ottumwa, IA.
The food collection drive ends Sept. 30.
