DES MOINES, IOWA -- Iowa Governor Terry Branstad says his ownership of about a dozen rural buildings that currently house post offices pose no conflict of interest with his criticism of the U.S. Postal Service's decision to close many smaller post offices.
Branstad said on Tuesday that only one of the 178 rural post offices slated for closure in Iowa is owned by him and his wife, Chris. That is a post office in Lohrville.
Branstad released two letters last week that he sent to Postmaster General Patrick Donohoe protesting the closures.
The governor says he wants to see a comprehensive plan from the Postal Service about how it plans to deal with their budget troubles. Branstad says closing a handful of rural offices will not make a dent in the agency's budget troubles.
