OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Drivers can expect to see more law enforcement on the roads this holiday weekend.
Starting Friday evening, the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office plans to have extra deputies patrolling highways through Monday evening. The same can be said for the Iowa State Patrol.
Wapello County Sheriff Don Kirkendall says there are several things that his deputies will be looking for but they mainly want their presence to be seen.
“Our goal isn't really to go out and write a lot of citations,” Kirkendall said. “It's just more of a safety thing.”
Kirkendall added that officials are going to be concentrating on speed, seat belts and drunk driving.
“With the long weekend, more parties, more drinking, there again we want to keep the drunk drivers off the roads. We want everybody to have a good time but we don’t want them getting behind the wheel.”
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is participating in operation C.A.R.E. which means every state trooper is working some time during the holiday period. Troopers will not only be aggressively enforcing the traffic laws, but also helping motorists with roadside emergencies.
