OTTUMWA -- For our Facebook story of the day you wanted to know more about the spider population in the heartland.

The most common spiders seen here are garden and house spiders.  KTVO spoke with Ernie Meadows who is a branch manager for Orkin.  He says this fall will be big for spiders in our area.

“Spiders this whole year have been a lot higher than in other years because of the weather we’ve been having,” said Meadows.  “It’s been either awful wet or it’s so dry that spiders are looking for some place to hide and then they come inside your home.”

It’s not all bad.  Meadows tells KTVO you can help prevent spiders from invading your home.  Make sure your windows are sealed properly.  As the leaves start to fall make sure they are raked away from the side of your house.  These are hotbeds for the eight-legged creatures.  As soon as you see spider webs, spray and clean up the area.

Spiders also go where there is a food source.  If you’re having problems with other insects, chances are you’ll have spiders too.
