OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Wesley United Methodist Church held its Aug. 28 Sunday morning worship service outside in the heart of downtown Ottumwa.

Church members brought their lawn chairs and sat out on the grass while the contemporary choir sang praise songs. The church has worship outside at least once every summer. The pastor says the outdoor service serves as an invitation to those in the community to stop by their church for worship.

"We would be thrilled if the community came and shared but even if they don't, they'll see that we're here, that we're active and we hope that creates interest in our church," said Pastor Jay Amundson.

The church has a traditional Sunday worship service at 9 a.m. and a contemporary worship service at 11:15 a.m. The congregation will resume Sunday school and Wednesday night activities the second week of September.
