OTTUMWA -- A Heartland group looks to restore and preserve Iowa's air-born history.

The group “Friends of Naval Air Station” is looking to turn the old administration building at the Ottumwa Regional Airport into a museum.  The building is run down and members of the group believe it could be lost like other historic sites at the airport.

Bob Taylor, of the Airpower Museum outside of Ottumwa, says residents should support this cause.

“In the first place, it would be a great tourist attraction for the city of Ottumwa,” said Taylor.  There would be people here that wouldn’t come probably otherwise.”

Taylor says it’s also in the nation’s best interest to preserve its history.  Members of Friends of Naval Air Station spoke at Monday’s city council meeting asking for support.

Taylor's group is waiting to be considered a non-profit organization before moving forward.  They hope to buy and restore the building in the first phase of the project.
