AGENCY, IOWA -- Teachers in the Cardinal Community School District are rallying support for their school district.
50 teachers canvassed the streets of Agency, Batavia and Eldon, going door-to-door to alert the community about the district's latest fundraisers and the district meet-and-greet event coming up Tuesday, August 23, from 5:30 to 7pm.
"We're just really hoping we can get everybody we can out to the school tomorrow basically a kickoff for the school year and letting people know we're a team and it's a partnership," said Cardinal Elementary School Principal Cindy Shepherd. " We need their support and we appreciate the support they've given us so far.
The teachers also informed the community of their Fesler Auto Test Drive Fundraiser event, entitled Drive One 4UR School, being on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8 am to 3 pm. Everyone who comes to test drive a vehicle earns the district $20, to be used for different extracurricular activities such as the marching band. Fesler is donating a maximum of $6,000.
The teachers not only stopped by local residences but also businesses.
"We're a small community so we rely a lot on our community and our local businesses to help us out. They're a big support for our school district, so it's kind of our way of showing our appreciation and a thank you to them."
The teachers also told community members about the elementary school's new playground. Superintendent Joel Pedersen said these outreach efforts are important because more than half of the people living in these communities do not have children enrolled in the district.
