KIRKSVILLE -- The Kirksville City Council is looking into the possibility of allowing the Kirksville Municipal Judge to issue search warrants.

As of now in the city of Kirksville, warrants can only be issued for matters of state charges, but the city has some ordinances in which a search warrant may not be issued.

These ordinances include vicious animals, smoke ban and carbon monoxide detectors.

The city of Moberly already has this operation in place. Kirksville Chief of Police Jim Hughes has been advised that the municipal search warrant process has rarely been used, but it is nice to have.

The Kirksville City Council noted they would like to continue to look into this matter.

Mari Macomber will be meeting with the Kirksville Municipal Judge later this week to discuss the matter in further detail.
