DES MOINES, IOWA -- With the 2011 Iowa Republican Straw Poll in the record books, the Iowa Democratic Party is going on the offensive.
President Obama will be heading to the Hawkeye State this week to campaign and promote jobs in the Heartland.
KTVO spoke with Iowa Democratic Party Chair Sue Dvorsky about the Republican Straw Poll and winner, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.
“She is apart of a group of extreme right-wing Tea Party Republicans – dragging the entire conversation and trying to drag the entire process to the right,” said Dvorsky.
The conversation Dvorsky was pointing out is the president’s recent struggles with Congressional Republicans over the nation’s debt ceiling and the nation’s credit rating. President Obama has also encountered resistance from the Tea Party on issues such as Health Care Reform and Tax Reform.
Members of the Tea Party believe that the federal government is too big; but Democrats believe that you need government to assist in the process of creating jobs and getting the country back on the right track.
“These are people that say no, no, no! No matter what his idea is. They argue against their own ideas when he embraces them, so I am not sure what that (the resistance) is,” said Dvorsky.
Dvorsky hopes that people who classify themselves as independents will come out and support Democrats in the 2012 elections, but she knows that she and her party have a lot of work to do to get out the vote.
“I think that Melinda (the chair of the Wapello County Democratic Party) and the Democrats in Wapello County and Democrats all over that district understand for whatever reason that the opposition to this president is personal and it is persistent, and our job (to get him re-elected) is going to be a big one,” said Dvorsky.
