OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Ottumwa police say driving and pointing toy guns at other drivers is just not a good idea.
They say that's exactly what happened around 4:30 p.m.,Friday, Aug. 12.
According to police, a woman called dispatch while driving down the highway coming from Davis County into Ottumwa, saying that someone was pointing a gun at her from another car.
She helped law enforcement locate the car near Minnesota and Mary Avenue in Ottumwa.
Everyone was ordered out of the car and onto the ground, including a male, female and two children.
Law enforcement officers then searched the car and found two toy guns, which then ended the traffic stop.
"When we get a call like this about someone pointing a gun, we take it seriously," said Ottumwa Police Chief Jim Clark. "Parents need to teach their children not to point toy guns at people because the other person doesn't know if it's real or not."
Chief Clark said it is standard procedure that if a report is made that someone has a gun, officers make them get out of the car and onto the ground, while they search the vehicle.
