ROCK PORT, MO -- A northwest Missouri woman says she is not just another eccentric woman with a lot of cats.
Marie Hurtig is housing dozens of cats displaced by the flooding Missouri River in Atchison County.
Before the water came, plans had been under way to establish an animal rescue shelter in Rock Port. A local contest to name it came up with "Cat Ranch."
Hurtig says many of the cats will be returned to their owners after the water recedes.
The St. Joseph News-Press reports that the shelter will be built near Hurtig's farmhouse east of Rock Port.
Meanwhile, she has kennels stacked two deep in her living room. The cats rotate out of the kennels to play.
The
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
approved the arrangement.
