FAIRFIELD, IOWA -- Another dog park gains approval.

Fairfield will be the latest city to soon build its own park. The new park is set to open at Lamson Woods on the southeast corner of town.

Fairfield mayor Ed Malloy says that this park has been a long time coming.

“We’re a very pet-friendly city,” said Malloy.  “I think that there was just interest that came up from within the community to have and develop a dog park.”

Malloy added that private funds will help create the dog park.

Some residents wanted to see the dog park moved to the OB Nelson Park near the Fairfield middle school.  Residents are concerned with the increase in noise, traffic and dog mess at Lamson Woods.

“There’s a native wetland in that area.  Although the requirements for this park will be the same for any city park: that people are going to be expected to pick up the dog waste.”

Malloy says the dog park should open sometime this fall.
