OTTUMWA, IOWA -- One of the biggest scams targeting seniors across the country right now is Medicare fraud.

Dot Maudlin is a volunteer with Seneca Area Agency on Aging helping to fight Medicare fraud. “If they receive phone calls from people claiming to be Medicare agents, be careful. The key thing is to never give out your Medicare number to anyone unless they are satisfied that it won’t be abused. Medicare is the only agency that uses a Social Security number as an identification number,” Maudlin said.
“Even when you go to the doctor’s office and you have to present your Medicare card, be careful with the people around you; that they don’t stand there and stare and write your number down. Protect that Medicare number because it is your Social Security number and it is easy for people to steal your identity,” Maudlin said.
Representatives of Seneca Area Agency on Aging have been attending events throughout southeast Iowa to spread the word to seniors about this problem. They have been attending county fairs throughout southeast Iowa in the past few months.
