KIRKSVILLE, MO --
Area middle school students are up to their elbows in science and health this week.
Students from all over the region are attending a two-day science and health camp put on by the Northeast Missouri Area Health Education Center.M.A.S.H. Camp started Tuesday at Truman State University where the students learned about anatomy and dissected a fetal pig.
The camp continues Wednesday at Northeast Regional Medical Center.
“They're going to get to work with KCOM residents tomorrow, and they're going to get to do a suturing lab so they'll be suturing on chicken legs and on bananas and get to kind of do a gown/glove scrub-in so they'll know what it's like to do surgery, so full, fun-packed days,” said Camp Director Nancy Johnson.
The NEMO Area Health Education Center is a non-profit organization in Kirksville that works with people of all ages who are interested in healthcare careers.
This is its fourth year hosting the MASH Camp in Kirksville.
Organizers say the kids love the hands-on activities.
