Purple Heart recipient dies

KEOKUK, IOWA -- A soldier injured in Iraq more than six years ago is laid to rest.

Robert William Briggs of Hillsboro was 42.  He was injured on April 16, 2005, while serving with the 224th Combat Engineers Co. C in Keokuk and Mount Pleasant and received the Purple Heart Medal.  Briggs died of those injuries on June 28, 2011, in Washington, County.

A graveside service was held Monday in Keokuk National Cemetery. 

Briggs remained active in outdoor activities and was the vice president of English River Outfitters, a non-profit group designed to give veterans a safe outdoor experience. A memorial has been established to English River Outfitters in Washington, Iowa. Memorials may be mailed to Bob Briggs Memorial, c/o West Liberty State Bank, P.O. Box 78, West Liberty, IA 52776.

Briggs and his wife, Michelle, worked to change state and federal law on the treatment of injured veterans.
