DAVIS COUNTY, IOWA -- First responders in Davis County had their hands full early Monday morning as flash flooding caused two vehicles to be stranded.
The first event took place just after midnight. A Bloomfield Police Officer noticed a vehicle on Jefferson Street entering high water on the roadway; after the vehicle entered the water, it stalled out, leaving five people stranded. Three of passengers were juveniles.
According to the Bloomfield Police Department, the officer helped the stranded occupants out; they were then taken to Davis County Hospital as a pre-caution.
The second incident took place later in the morning as a driver was completing his paper route.
Heavy rain caused the creek near Oxen Trail to over fill its banks - that is near the U.S. 63 and 160th Street.
According to Davis County Sheriff Dave Davis, the driver entered the water and got stuck halfway. The driver was able to call 9-1-1 for assistance and was treated at the scene.
The sheriff explained to KTVO how law enforcement work together in situations like these...
“We depend on the fire department and or some of our surrounding law enforcement. They have water rescue capabilities and if needed we can call on them and they would assist us,” said Sheriff Davis.
He also added words of caution…
“When we are getting this heavy rain and flash flooding you get these low lying areas you need to be very cautious because there is no where for the water to go and it is coming up over the roadways, so you need to take extra care,” said Sheriff Davis.
