KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Memorial services are planned for a longtime Kirksville educator. Former Kirksville High School band director John Schwarz died Saturday night in England where he was visiting family. Schwarz was 66.

A celebration of life is planned for John Schwarz on Saturday, July 23, at 2 p.m. in the Kirksville High School gymnasium. A reception will follow in the high school cafeteria and band room.

Schwarz was involved with the Kirksville band for 30 years before retiring in 2007. A special tribute is planned on Friday, July 22. The Kirksville Community Band will perform that night on the south side of the square at 7 p.m. The final song will be "Old Scottish Melody."

For many years this song was the last piece the seniors performed at their final concert. Upon his retirement, Schwarz walked out with his seniors to this song.

K-H-S band alumni are invited to join the Community Band on July 22 to play the song. They are also welcome to play the entire concert with the band, but are asked to make.arrangements to attend rehearsal.

The Community Band rehearses Mondays in the K.H.S. Band room at 7 p.m.
