KIRKSVILLE, MO --
Area residents made a splash at the Kirksville Aquatic Center Tuesday in hopes of setting a new record for the World's Largest Swimming Lesson.
Lessons for infants through adults were going on at pools around the globe to try and beat last year's record of about 4,000 participants.
This was Kirksville's first time hosting the event with 41 swimmers.
“This event was pretty easy. It did require a little bit of planning. We had to get two witnesses to come out and verify our event, we had to videotape it, take pictures, and then we also had everyone sign in on an official log sheet, so basically the big work starts next is getting everything around for the submission process,” said Recreation Specialist Robin Harden.
Harden says the mass swim lesson was a success, and they'll try to get more participants next year. Swimming lessons are available at the Aquatic Center, so it’s never too late to learn.
The global event was started last year to teach the importance of swimming lessons to prevent drowning.
The results aren't posted yet, but we'll let you know if the record was broken when that information becomes available. Check out the World's Largest Swimming Lesson page on Facebook.
