OTTUMWA, IOWA -- We've learned of a scam going around the Ottumwa area that is targeting the elderly for money.

A man received a call from a person claiming to be his grandson. The caller said he was arrested in Canada, and needed $3,000 for bail.

The scam artist had an elaborate story, saying he flew to Canada to attend a friend's funeral, and urged the man not to call his parents. Another person even got on the phone and pretended to be a police officer.

The victim was considering sending the money Western Union, but was stopped by a friend.

Before the scam artist hung up, he said “That guy just saved you $3,000.”

If you receive a phone call this one, you're encouraged to hang up right away.

Never send money, or give out any personal financial information.
