DES MOINES, IOWA -- On June 8, 2011, Carl Deon Shinn, age 50, of Udell, Iowa, was convicted of Attempted Enticement of a Minor following a three-day jury trial announced United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. The charges resulted after Shinn engaged in on-line chats with an undercover sheriff’s deputy in Waterloo, Iowa, who was posing as a 14-year old girl.
Between February 18, 2006 and May 4, 2006, Shinn engaged in approximately 40 sexually explicit chats with the undercover officer deputy. Shinn was arrested on May 5, 2006, at a motel in Waterloo, where he had rented a room to meet the 14-year old. A search of Shinn’s vehicle revealed a camera, several video recorders, and numerous condoms.
“This office is committed to protecting our children from on-line predators,” said U.S. Attorney Klinefeldt. “Shinn demonstrated his desire to sexually assault a minor by engaging in numerous explicit chats with the undercover officer and by traveling from rural Appanoose County to Waterloo to meet with her.” Shinn faces a mandatory minimum sentence of ten (10) years in prison up to life in prison as a result of the attempted enticement conviction. The sentencing hearing will be held on September 8, 2011.
This case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of Iowa, and was investigated by the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office and the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office.
