SIGOURNEY -- The Keokuk County sheriff will be carrying a memorial with him every day on the job: a handgun ordered by Deputy Sergeant Eric Stein before he was killed in the line of duty.

Sheriff Jeff Shipley told Cedar Rapids television station KCRG that the gun arrived after Stein was slain. Jeffrey Krier who had a history of mental illness, killed Stein on April 4 during a standoff at Krier's home near Sigourney. Krier was killed by officers.

The Iowa Attorney General's Office later said the killing of Krier was justified.

Shipley says he paid for the new Glock handgun and will carry it as long as he's sheriff. He says he expects to pass it along to his replacement, starting a department tradition.
