KIRKSVILLE, MO --
Veterans, community members, and service men and women gathered at Rieger Armory in Kirksville Monday morning to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.

The annual service is put on by the Veterans Organizations in Adair County.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel John Buckwalter was the Master of Ceremonies.

Kirksville Salvation Army Major Kathy Hogg was the featured speaker at the service. She spoke of her personal experience growing up in a military family.

“I think it's taught me true patriotism and what it means for us to give our all for our country, and the importance of the freedom, that we have to fight for that and to help our neighbors who are being bullied to fight for that too,” Hogg said.

Major Hogg filled in for her husband, Major Bill Hogg, who couldn't speak because he was called to serve in Joplin, Missouri after the tornado hit.

Military honors and a somber rendition of Taps ended the Memorial Day service.
