DES MOINES, IOWA -- Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds Friday congratulated the two high school seniors from Iowa who have been named 2011 United States Department of Education Presidential Scholars.

The following Iowa students were selected as U.S Department of Education Presidential Scholars:

Edna L. Jones of Fairfield, Iowa

Fairfield Community High School

David Y. Huang of Iowa City, Iowa

Iowa City West High School

“On behalf of the people of Iowa, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate these Iowa students on their distinguished award,” said Gov. Terry Branstad.

“Edna and David were chosen from the nearly 3,000 students identified as candidates for this year’s award; Iowa is proud of these exceptional students.”

“These students set a great example for academic achievement,” said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.

“The people of Iowa are proud to be represented by these fine young people.”

Created in 1964 by an Executive Order by the President of the United States, the Presidential Scholars Program recognizes the country’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. This year’s award winners include one male and one female from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and from families living abroad. Additionally, 15 students were selected at large, and 20 students were selected from the visual and performing arts.

The Scholars are invited to National Recognition Week in Washington, D.C., in June.

A full list of Scholars can be found at www.ed.gov/programs/psp/awards.html.
