FAIRFIELD, IOWA -- A Fairfield student is getting national recognition.
Edna Jones, a senior at Fairfield High School is one of 560 semi-finalists for the Presidential Scholars Program award. Out of 3.2 million graduating seniors, she was one of the lucky few to make the semi-finalist round. The award recognizes the country's most distinguished high school seniors.
Jones says it still hasn't sunk in yet but that she is being modest about it.
"I kind of can't believe it because I had some other friends as candidates and they didn't get to the semifinalist round."
Fairfield Principal Art Sathoff says Jones is a very active student.
"She's a good track athlete for us. She's in both instrumental and vocal music. As I said before, a truly gifted student especially as a mathematician. So I'm excited about her to have a chance at this recognition."
Jones is not the first to be recognized from Fairfield. The school had another semi-finalist three years ago.
The next round will be next month when finalists will be reduced to 141 candidates.
