Centerville man charged with attempted murder

KTVO has learned the victim is now listed in good condition at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

An assault early Monday morning leaves a Centerville woman in the hospital with life threatening injuries, and Centerville man charged with attempted murder.

Centerville Police found a unconscious female in the 600 block of North Main Street in the early morning hours of April 25.

The woman was transported to Mercy Medical in Des Moines by air ambulance with injuries that are described by police as life-threatening.

Two hours later, Jacob Daniel Johnson, 26, of Centerville was arrested in the North Main Street assault and charged with Attempt to Commit Murder and Domestic Abuse Assault.

Johnson remains in the Appanoose County Jail on $25,000 bond.

Centerville Police responded to a second assault on Monday morning. At roughly 3:17 a.m. Centerville Police responded to Mercy Medical Center in Centerville to investigate a report of an assault of a 23-year old man which had allegedly taken place on Drake Avenue.

The male victim in that case was also air lifted to Mercy Medical in Des Moines with serious injuries.

No arrest has been made in the Drake Avenue assault.

Both cases are still under investigation. Demry did not indicate whether police believe the cases are related.

Although the press release says the incident happened in March, the event actually happened on April 25.  KTVO confirmed the correct date with the Centerville Police Department.

On Monday, March 25, 2011 at approximately 2:19 a.m. officers from the Centerville Police Department and the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an assault in the 600 block of North Main Street.  Upon their arrival officers located an unconscious 30 year old female.  The female victim was transported to Mercy Medical Center, Centerville and later transferred to Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines by Air Ambulance due to potential life threatening injuries. 

At approximately 3:17 a.m. officers responded to Mercy Medical Center, Centerville to investigate an assault of a 23 year old male which had occurred in the 500 block of Drake Avenue.  The male victim was later transferred to Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines by Air Ambulance due to serious injuries.

At approximately 4:47 a.m. officers located Jacob Daniel Johnson, age 26, in the 200 Block of North 13th Street.  Johnson was arrested and charged with Attempt to Commit Murder, a Class B Felony, and Domestic Abuse Assault with Intent to Inflict a Serious Injury, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.  These charges are in conjunction to the assault on North Main Street.  Johnson is currently being held in the Appanoose County Jail with a bond set at $25,000.00.

No charges have been filed in conjunction to the assault on Drake Avenue at this time.  Both cases are still under investigation by the Centerville Police Department and further charges are expected.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
